My home town Gorinchem was recently voted the most beautiful fortified town in The Netherlands. Along with a thousand years of history and its recently acquired status as a UNESCO World Heritage, there are plenty of reasons to come here.

My year in Review: 2020
I write one of these “year in review” posts every year, but this is going to be a weird one. Where do I even begin to summarise 2020? Let’s not forget that it wasn’t all bad though. Despite the absolute mess that is 2020, I’ve had some good times this year as well.

I wanted to do something special on my last day in Hong Kong. It was not just my last day in Hong Kong, but also the end of my long overland journey that had started all the way in Holland. However, after spending quite a bit of money on two expensive day trips, I was looking for an inexpensive way to celebrate. Thankfully, good food comes cheap in Hong Kong. Even in the form of Michelin-starred dim sum at Tim Ho Wan.

Before my trip to Hong Kong, I was in two minds about taking a day off my precious time there to visit places outside the city. I feared there wouldn’t be enough time to see Hong Kong and I didn’t want to waste a lot of travel time by visiting places outside the city. However, when I was there, I just couldn’t resist the urge to hop on a ferry for a day trip to Macao and cross another country off my list.

I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to visit Hong Kong Disneyland while I was in the city. As far as theme parks go, Disney parks are very expensive. On the other hand, I’d always wanted to visit one and now that I was so close to it, I might as well go. It turned out to be one of the best days I had in Hong Kong.

When I researched the best places to visit in Hong Kong, I came across a bunch of lists with foods to try or restaurants to check out. Many of the recommendations fell into the street food category. I wrote a list, skipped breakfast and went on a DIY food tour. I love to eat street food when I travel. More often than not, it is made by someone who spends every single day making the same dish, perfecting it into a snack or a meal loved by both tourists and locals.

On Sunday, I wanted to escape the busy city and see some of the greener parts of Hong Kong. A large part of Hong Kong Island is actually not filled with skyscrapers, impossible as it may seem from the perspective of Victoria harbour. I was spending the day with my best friend. Our plan of hiking the Dragon’s Back trail didn’t really go as well as I’d hoped.

After travelling for 27 days and about 12.500km on trains, I finally reached Hong Kong. It felt strange to know that the train journey was over. At the same time, I was really excited to explore Hong Kong. During the first couple of days of my stay, I would finally get to hang out with my best friend in her home town.

It is the shortest day of the year, and the first day of Winter. Just like I have done in the past few years, I’d like to reflect on my year. I have made some incredible memories in 2019, and I hope next year will be another good one.

For my last day in Beijing, I was looking for something to do that wouldn’t make me feel like I was melting in the humid heat of the city. I also still needed to visit the Drum Tower, which was right around the corner from my hostel.
